Jaw Pain
Jaw Pain
Are jaw pain and its associated symptoms making your life difficult or unpleasant? Perhaps you have sought assistance, only to be solely relying on a mouthguard, which does not seem to be helping? We offer evidence based treatment with Anna van Piggelen, to help relieve your pain and offer long-term solutions for both children and adults.
TMJ disorders can be caused by various factors, including jaw misalignment, teeth grinding, stress, arthritis, or trauma to the jaw joint. Symptoms associated with the TMJ range from jaw pain and aches, headaches, clenching or grinding (bruxism), ear problems (itching, fullness or muffled sounds, tinnitus), snoring, problems with chewing/swallowing/opening your mouth, unexplained toothache, a locked jaw, or breathing difficulties.
Our TMJ appointments combine a full orofacial myofunctional assessment alongside hands-on therapy inside and outside of the mouth and around the body, including buccal massage and facial acupuncture where appropriate.
At your initial assessment there will be a deep-dive into your history including habits as a child. You will go through where things may have gone awry and what can be done about it now. Session amounts vary from condition to condition but will also be explained to you in this session.
Children or adults without pain that are looking to work on their orofacial habits also have the opportunity to do so via myofunctional therapy sessions without hands-on treatment.
The main goal of therapy is to influence:
- Nasal breathing
- Lip strength and seal
- Tongue strength and tongue position
- Correct swallow patterns
Working on these may help:
